First Presbyterian Church of Shakopee, Minnesota

JUNE 2010 ISSUE

God, give us the grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, courage to change the things that should be changed and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.

The Serenity Prayer (1934) Reinhold Niebuhr

Many of you know a variation of the Serenity Prayer and many may not want to know it as it talks about ‘change’!  and change is difficult for most of us!

For some children, teenagers, young adults, or even older adults, change is usually seen as an adventure, fun, exciting and a part of the joy of living.  New experiences lead to new discoveries about life and the world in which we live.

Somewhere along the line, many of us lose these child-like qualities!  We give in to being creatures of habit and learn to appreciate our “comfort zone.”  We dislike any change that disturbs our comfort!  And as we age, some of us begin to enjoy change less and less.

Yet, because of our continued journey of faith, we are in the midst of change and as “they” say, the only thing in life that doesn’t change is change itself!

In our personal lives and in our life as a Community of Faith, God is always doing a new thing!

Do not cling to the events of the past or dwell on what happened long ago.

Watch for the new thing I am going to do.  It is happening already – you can see it now!

Isaiah 43:19

In the congregation charge, at our 155th Anniversary, I quote Pastor Ray “…My charge to you today comes in these thoughts.  At an anniversary, it is always popular to reminisce and remember, especially “the way it was.  It feels good to look back; to catch snapshots of the past.  However, to look back too much may prove to be as dangerous as ‘texting while driving’”.

My Friends, I do not consider, that I have made it on my own; but one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.  Let those of us who are mature be this minded; and if in anything you are otherwise minded, God will reveal that also to you.   Philippians 3:13-15

Pastor Ray continued… “Where there is not vision, the people perish – the vision…is stepping stones of the future,…forward to the hope of the Savior. … We have a Savior and Lord to whom we look – VISION.  We have a purpose – TO FINISH THE RACE,…as Christians, as Christ’s people, and for Christ’s call to make disciples of all nations.”

Let’s not always have to do things our way – let’s always do things the Christ Way

Let’s have a vision of First Presbyterian Church being a ‘Jesus Style’ Church!

Amen?  Amen!

MISSION FOR JUNE

College of the Ozarks is an unique campus where students work to pay for their education and may graduate debt free.  They gain work experience in many programs on campus.  This college offers more than 312 academic majors.  Students are required to work 15 hours during the week, along with two 40 hour weeks during school breaks.  This school was founded by a Presbyterian minister who wanted to help the poor people in the Ozark area.  The students learn to work with their head, their heart and their hands at the College of the Ozarks which is located southeast of Branson, Missouri.  This school has been famous for its fruitcakes since the 1930’s and produces about 30,000 fruitcakes each year which generates significant income and good will for the school.  Please give generously to College of the Ozarks during the month of June.

STEWARDSHIP and FINANCE

Submitted by Nathan Olson

Matthew 23:37  O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.

Isaiah 30:18  Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; He rises to show you compassion, for the Lord is a God of justice.  Blessed are all who wait for Him!

2 Corinthians 9:8  And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things, at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

Psalm 50:10  for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills.  I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine.  If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.

Haggai 2:8  'The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the LORD Almighty.

He owns the cattle on a thousand hills, the wealth in every mine.  He owns the rivers and the rocks and rills, the sun and stars that shine.  Wonderful riches, more than tongue can tell.  He is my Father, so they’re mine as well.  He owns the cattle on a thousand hills.  I know that He will care for me.

CROCODILE DOCK

Vacation Bible School is fast approaching. If you haven’t signed up your child please do so today. If you would like to help at VBS let Colleen Bush know. We are also looking for people to help with the VBS set, so if you would like to do a little construction work let Colleen know.

DEACONS

Submitted by Edie Cook

The Deacons hope that YOU can help us with the Cub Food Wagon June 24-27. The sign-up sheet is on a bulletin board in the entry to the church. Check times and dates and sign up for a slot. Three people are needed for each time slot. We can have one youth working per shift, but they must be going into 6th grade to work in the trailer. If you can't work, then stop in to eat. We will be open from 3-8 on Thursday and Friday, and 11 to 7 on Saturday and Sunday.

The Deacons hosted the annual Ice Cream Social on Sunday, May 23 after church to honor the Sunday School Staff and all the Sunday School children and adults. We hope that you enjoyed the cool refreshments!

Also if you are attending a church camp this summer, the Deacons will give you $40.00 towards the cost. Lyle Crider is the treasurer and will help you with the reimbursement.

Don't forget that the Deacons are available for visits and rides to church or appointments.
